A poem for a Monday

I wrote this today during class — we’re studying Poe and read the Raven, Annabel Lee and The River today. So…

Students 2/25
Pull out my hair
Every day those blank stares
The question I hear
Each day, all year
What are we doing today?
Is all they ever say…
My crazy, yet wishful, obsession
Is for a class to ask smart questions
To care about what they learn
For their education, to yearn
Yet instead all I hear,
Is, “I wish I wasn’t here”
